Here at Rising Phoenix I like to offer some rare and unusual materials, and things not easily found elsewhere. Krishnai Char is a superb example.

For those not familiar with the term, Char is a type of Agarwood formation found in long dead trees and tree stumps from long ago harvested trees.

Essentially a tree will fall over or was cut and harvested sometime in the past...but the stump and roots didn’t die. They’ll go on to form Char, kept alive by the surrounding trees. A phenomenon only now gaining understanding in the West - but long ago understood in the East. Char can come from trees that “died” decades, even centuries ago. Makes ya look at stumps in the forests surrounding us in a whole new light !

Maybe you’ve hard of Char. Maybe you’ve even burned some. But I’ll bet you’ve never seen an oil produced from it. Rare, indeed.

THE SCENT

Some folks love those ethereal top notes and bright fruits and flowers found in newer distillation styles. We generally term those styles “New Gen” distillations.

With New Gen oils all the rave these days, I hear a lotta griping that few are offering “the old sh*t” any longer. Not necessarily fermentation - but those old style oils that are full throttle, testosterone in a bottle. Deep. Dark. Rich. If that sounds appealing ... keep reading 😉

Distilled in 2016, this isn’t an oil we produced, but it is one that one of my guys that combs the countryside for me did find. I hear from him when he finds something really special.

Traditionally distilled in a wood-fired Deg and Bapka - these old style distillations are something I try to reserve some space in the shop for, as they are held in high esteem from quite a few folks in the game. Especially the old players, and with folks where the newer styles of production just miss the mark for. These are Ouds that get your blood coursing with a roar.

These particular Char formations, although known and occasionally appreciated in the East - are especially beloved in the Gulf. They perform beautifully on charcoal, and even lower grade Chips can be juicy and full of resin. And the high grade stuff ... you can practically swim in the bubbles. Now imagine that as an oil 🤯

The scent of roasting cacoa beans wafting through dense jungle foliage. Tendrils of wood fire carrying that rich dark chocolate to your nose.

Hints of Oud Smoke embrace the Caramelized Peat of an aged Islay Whisky, revving that inner beast that gets that blood pumping. As that sugar continues to condense and turn from caramel to molasses, dark, thick Char bubbles of resin and Tobacco leaves finish off the evening.

This is Krishnai Char.

If you’re tired of the bright tropical florals or the jammy fruits and honey - or you simply need an Oud that roars without being animalic or barnyardy - look no further.
