Jungle : Melawi : West Kalimantan, Borneo Island - Indonesia
Class : Wild, Incense Grade
Species : Malaccensis & Hirta/Candan Co-distillation
Distillation : Hybrid Vacuum Co-Distillation New Gen
Distillation Date : February, 2022
For those not familiar with my work, I've got several distillation operations in several different locations now. Each location has a unique set up, yielding unique oils - and we are generally distilling woods within their own countries of origin.
This particular oil comes from my proprietary Vacuum setup in Indonesia, one that we juiced back in February of 2022 - so we have the added bonus of a little aging already at the time of release. We are able to distill these oils in a very unique way, unlike anyone else out there is doing them, and in-so doing, we are able to capture notes and profiles you've likely never experienced.
In addition to the unique set up - we combined harvests from 2 species from an area of West Kalimantan for a unique co-distillation, combining Malaccensis with Hirta/Candan. Hirta/Candan is a small, incredibly rare type of Agarwood species that normally wont yield huge amounts of wood due to the small size of the tree, but the wood it does produce is incredibly prized, especially in the Arab market. It's known for it's unique spiciness, which plays out delightfully in this distillation.
ABOUT
When we talk about Kalimantan or Borneo oils - names like Malinau or Tarakan, areas to the north eastern part of Indo Kalimantan - come to mind. West Kalimantan we see less frequently in our market - and Melawi, a region within West Kalimantan and further inland from the coast - even less so.
You'll notice the oils is called Melawi Kalbar ...
KALBAR, which is short for "Kalimantan Barat" - is the local name for the region that has gone into the legends of the History of Oud in the Gulf Region.
Apart from Malinau and Tarakan in the North East, which I had previously mentioned - Kalbar is known for some legendary Agarwood profiles that are craved by Agarwood connoisseurs that are in-the-know. From Sekadau to Putussibau, this region has got a number of forests with delectable profiles. Melawi woods and oils we rarely get to see, as it is further South and Inland ... juiced like nobody but Rising Phoenix can, so this is an extra special treat!
SCENT
Personally, I really like incense-style distillations both for their complexity, as well as their potency, and I break those down in to two types of distillations :
1. Smokey Incense - more akin to heating a chip on charcoal
2. Not necessarily smokey - but an incense'y character to the oil that is like the first wisps of heating a chip on one of our Subitisms
Melawi Kalbar 2022 I'd say has elements of both - and you'll be quite pleased with the distinctiveness of the scent.
New Gen/Non-soaking style means no fermentation notes and a clear, clean odor profile devoid of any barnyard. So if you don't like the funk - you should really give this a try.
To produce Melawi Kalbar 2022, we juiced Incense Grade Malacenssis and Candan/Hirta Chips, and you'll notice a hint of floral milkiness already present on the front end of the oil.
The oil when it first came out of the still was GREEN. It's settled to a reddish color that is rather soothing to the eye.
The floral notes on this are just incredible. It's floral without smelling like any particular flower, wound around incense smoke, and a little bit of a vivid spicy jungliness, without smelling overly green. I had to wear it several times before it all started to make sense.
Beyond saying it is Floral and Incense'y, Jungly and Spicy and intensely Oudy - it has great mind buzz that some folks rave about. Maybe even a little Oceanic and Minty. This oil is certainly a more "active" oil - a good pick-me-up. And like Borneos are known for - this is an excellent hot weather oil to wear, as it's not heavy or overbearing. It also shows a nice personality shift between the heat and humidity outside, and the cooler interior of the home. Makes stepping out into the heat a little more bearable.
I can only imagine what a few years of aging will do to this oil - I'd highly recommend grabbing a bottle to use, and another to shelve. I promise - this oil is gonna be absolutely magical in a few years. It's not a huge batch - so I suggest not sleeping on this one too long.
Don’t forget to light up a stick of our Melawi Senkoh and contrast the wood against the oil !
