Jungle : Memberamo Raya Regency, Northern Papua - Indonesia
Class : Wild, Live Tree Filaria - Single Tree Harvest
Filaria is an interesting species, in that it can smell like several things...Grassy, Earthy, and Floral come to mind.
Until recently, Filaria wasn't really found in the Eastern Markets - but it's long been beloved in the Gulf Market, especially for it's green, foresty character. Makes sense when you think of it ... a region renowned for lots and lots of sand liking a scent reminiscent of greener pastures.
Arabs have a particular appreciation of Gyrinops and Filarias from Sri Lanka, various parts of Indonesia (like Papua, PNG, and Sulawesi), and most recently from the Philippines for this very reason - for these species ability to bring the jungle into the desert.
THE SCENT
Let me first start by saying - this batch is really something special. It came out better than I was hoping it wood by the look of the raw materials we used, which were incredibly resin dense, and filled with gorgeous purple and red resin. We got really, really lucky here.
Expect a Green, Chocolatey, Powdery, Resinous, almost meditative scent - with more emphasis on the Chocolatey, Powdery, Resinous notes, reminiscent of a Chinese Temple Incense. I'm going to risk saying that this smells like something you'd find from Baieido or Yamadamatsu ... it's got that high end Japanese quality to it. Pure, austere wood and resin.
Interestingly, if this were a batch from India, you'd see this being sold as Kalakassi, which is a particular type of formation more from skins or sheets within the logs. You'll note in the photos how many of the large chips are shaped like the rings in a log. Kalakassi is beloved in Hindi culture for the distinctive Oils they produce, and the unique scent of burning the wood. I think this Kalakassi-type formation we used to make this batch may well be what is making it so distinctive and unique!
This batch is so good I almost don't want to sell any. It's not a huge batch and was a rare Live, single-tree harvest - so be sure to grab some while available!
