Mokokchung Seufi 1999 : Ateek Series - Pure Wild Nagaland Oud Oil
Jungle : Mokokchung, Nagaland - India
Class : Wild Incense Grade Mountain Agallocha - 100% Pure Seufi
Distillation : Stainless, Wood-fired - 1999
Let me say simply - this oil is punching above it's price point. Way above.
This is mountain oud, which some would consider a distinct category in and of itself.
This is also a pure Seufi Oud - also a distinct category in and of itself. More on that shortly.
Hunters have long known that agarwood trees growing in mountainous areas yield the sweetest smelling wood, especially those from rocky cliffs.
Much of Nagaland is known for its gentle sweetness of flowers and wildflower honey present in the woods, and very lucky when those floral notes carry over in to the oil. It is already the well-known key feature of agarwood from this region, but extracting the oil can highlight those nuances.
You'll notice this oil has a some good years on it, too - which is why I'm adding it to the Ateek Series - a series of some very aged oils that I'll be releasing through 2022, and possibly in to 2023 if I don't get them all out before the end of the year. These are some real gems, and testaments to Time, History, and the Quality of Yesteryear. Distilled by veterans in the field often long gone from this earth. Be sure to search "Ateek" in the shop to discover some of these unique olfactory opportunities.
THE SCENT
I mentioned before that this is a pure Seufi Oud oil - and that Seufi oils are a class in and of themselves.
Seufi oils are produced exclusively from Agarwood found in the branches. Many don't realize it - but different parts of the tree, as well as different types of infections - all can have distinctive olfactory characteristics. Seufi oils are a mainstay in Gulf tastes - but as you can imagine, the quantity of oils being sold contrasted against the number of branches to be distilled ... you'll be lucky if a "Seufi Oud" on the mass market is 3-5% actual Seufi. Even that small percentage can impart a distinctive flavor to an oil that sets the mouths of lovers of Hindi Ouds to salivating.
Mokokchung Seufi, in contrast, is 100% Seufi. This is an unusual rarity generally found only direct from distillers or from exclusive VIP corners in select locations, and only in small quantities. Commercial companies usually blend oils like this in to big batches (rarely do you get single distillation oils from big companies).
In this instance - we acquired this directly from the distiller who produced this oil back in 1999 - pure and uncut, and distilled exclusively from the top 1/3 of branches from 100 + year old trees. 5 trees over a century old, to be exact. A real treat, to say the least.
So - knowing it's going to be a distinctive Seufi scent, I'm sure you're wondering - how's it smell, JK !?
As one client joked, "Like the toasted nuts of those that would destroy me - or not send the oils I paid for" haha
In all seriousness - the opening notes are that of savory toasted nuts. Maybe not of those that wish ill of me ... but seriously, toasted nuts. hehe
The first time I smelled this oil it took me back to when I was a kid when my folks would take me to the Indiana State Fair (the madre is from Indiana - and her side of the family is still out there). Remember those cinnamon almonds and toasted cashews that would scent the air as you walked by the stands? That's the first memory that struck me upon smelling this oil.
The oil transitions from Savory Toasted Nuts in to a Sensual Hay and Sweet Jaggery - that sweet, wood fired coconut sugar that if you've never had it, you need to. The Hay note in this is just gorgeous. It's not a fermented, farm'y hay note. Rather it's that sweet clover bails of hay that you smell in a barn - aging for winter. That sweetness from the Hay and that almost wood-fired coconut sugar note make me melt every time I open the bottle and swipe.
As if the oil hasn't been enough of an adventure - the Dry Down begins to express hints of Dark Cocoa, and the Hay notes transition into a Leatheriness that highlights the Seufi Resin oh-so-beautifully.
The unique geographical mountainous region of Mokokchung, coupled with the exclusive top branches of centennial trees used to produce this exclusive Seufi oil yields an exquisite savory sweetness that highlights the pronounced aroma of the region. The oil has had 23 gorgeous years of aging at present, to boot - rounding out the oil in much the same way whiskies get sweeter and smoother with time. Oils like this are not found out on the market, and when they are on those rare instances - they hide in vaulted VIP exclusive access, often never seeing the light of day for the likes of you and me.
This is a rare opportunity to add to your Ateek collection a superb example of a 100% aged Seufi oil, juiced exclusively from the top 1/3 of branches from 5 centennial trees. I sincerely hope a bottle of 1999 Mokokchung Seufi joins the archive in a good home like yours.
