Jungle : Naharani, Upper Assam - India
Class : Wild Seufi Dust and Broken Seufi Chips , Agallocha
Distillation : 2017, Traditional Deg and Bapka, Wood-fired - First 12 hours of Distillation
I try to offer a diversity of distillation styles - ranging from the squeakiest clean/terpiest New Gens, to varying degrees of fermentation (ranging, as I describe them, from Mozzarella to Brie and Camembert), to incense distillations reminiscent either of a chip on charcoal or a smokeless incense note, to traditional Deg and Bapka oils cooked over wood fires, as well as connoisseur Aged/Ateek oils with decades of beautiful maturing on them.
There is something for everyone here at Rising Phoenix ... oftentimes multiple somethings !
SEUFI ?
2017 Naharani Seufi is a pure Seufi Oud oil - and Seufi oils are a class in and of themselves.
Seufi oils are produced exclusively from Agarwood found in the branches. Many don't realize it - but different parts of the tree, as well as different types of infections - all can have distinctive olfactory characteristics. Seufi oils are a mainstay in Gulf tastes - but as you can imagine, the quantity of oils being sold contrasted against the number of branches to be distilled ... you'll be lucky if a "Seufi Oud" on the mass market is 3-5% actual Seufi. Even that small percentage can impart a distinctive flavor to an oil that sets the mouths of lovers of Hindi Ouds to salivating.
Naharani Seufi, in contrast, is 100% Seufi. This is an unusual rarity generally found only direct from distillers or from exclusive VIP corners in select locations, and only in small quantities. Commercial companies usually blend oils like this in to big batches (rarely do you get single distillation oils from big companies).
In this instance - we acquired this directly from the distiller who produced this oil back in 2017 - pure and uncut, and distilled exclusively from the upper branches from old trees - all around 70-90 years old.
So - knowing it's going to be a distinctive Seufi scent, I'm sure you're wondering - how's it smell, JK !?
THE SCENT
This is an interesting Seufi oil. Dry roasted nuts. Not overly savory. Not much Sweetness. At least not on the front end.
Naharani is an interesting area - well known for it's tea plantations, and a superb tea area at that. Although I wouldn't call this oil tea-like, I would say that it is like a good stiff cup of English Tea with no sugar and a little splash of milk. Natural sweetness of the tea and milk shining through.
Although not what I'd call a sweet oil, It does develop a little bit of maltiness after 30 or so minutes of wearing. Hints of smoke and dry incense form the Heart of the oil, with that lightly malted sweetness poking its head out here and there.
The dry down, I would argue, does have a little hint of dry tea leaves in there. Just a hint of fruits and leatheriness common to the teas from the Naharani area.
On the JK's Scale of Cheeses - this is a Nutty Brie. Very little fermentation. Good milkiness. Not overly daring. Easy to wear, especially if you like friendly Hindis that are not New Gen's.
As a comparison - 1999 Mokokchung Seufi is a VERY gourmand oil. TONS of chewy toasted nuts and caramel.
2017 Naharani Seufi, by contrast, is dry-roasted nuts, incense, with hints of hay and suede. Both Seufi oils, but quite different characters.
Seufi oils are distilled from the infected branches of Agarwood trees - and by default, they tend to be produced in small quantities. This oil has 6 years of aging on it already, so although it'll continue to develop over the years, I don't imagine we will see drastic changes to it in the short term. It's prime for wearing right now, no waiting necessary. Giggly
*This is a small batch, mind you - so this one will likely go more quickly than some of the other oils in the shop.
Be sure to grab some and find out just why Seufi oils are so highly beloved !
