Class : Wild, Primarily Malaccensis and Hirta, and a small quantity of Beccariana - Super Chips
Jungle : Northern Borneo/Kalimantan : Malinau - West of Malinau City (near Paking) - Indonesia

I've been trying to make some really diverse incense sticks - stuff from places rarely seen any longer, as well as from places few have even heard of.

This batch has a really fantastic Malinau scent, the northernmost region of Indonesian Borneo Island - from West of Malinau City somewhere around Paking.

This is a unique mix of chips - I picked up a little over a kg of chips consisting primarily of Malaccensis and Hirta species, with a small peppering of Beccariana, which adds a hint of a floral note to the rich Oudiness of the Malaccensis, and a spiciness from the Hirta.

All in our super thin 1.2mm size sticks, yielding a refined, nearly monkoh-quality scent.

SCENT

Part of the fun of these various incenses we've been making is the near endless flavor profiles from a myriad number of locations, each with their own distinctive terroir. The region already spells fantastic, but I wanted to spruce it up a bit - in this case, by combining 3 separate species from the same local jungle to yield a distinctive odor profile from a region already renowned for it's superb scent.

Malaccensis species is the most widely seen species in this particular jungle. The trees can grow quite large and live for centuries. Chips from this species are what most would consider the "standard" odor profile for Agarwood (similar to how Crassna species is the "standard" odor profile from countries like Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam).

Candan/Hirta trees grow only to the size of what you and I would call a palm tree. They are short, small, and compact compared to Malaccensis trees - and the trunks don't grow much thicker than your thigh, or maybe a human waistline. The trees are not only small, but they are also not nearly as prolific as Malaccensis trees, making them both more rare and more treasured - especially as their chips tend to get very black resin, and they have a spiciness to them that other species from the area often lack.

Beccariana trees are an Aquilaria subspecies. Loved by all, but especially in the Asian market, as the chips from this species have a floral note that is highly appreciated in Japan, China, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong markets. These delightfully floral notes are beloved by connoisseurs - and when traveling in Japan, it is Beccariana and Microcarpa from Borneo that I most frequently see when browsing Japanese wood selections.

We put this batch together like we would a nice meal - with the staple Malaccensis as the centerpiece, Candan/Hirta as the spicy accent, and the Beccariana as a dash of floral salt and pepper to bring it all together.

I'm really happy with how this distinctive Paking Malinau batch came out. I'll be curious to hear if you can pick out each of the unique accents from the 3 species in here - or if you experience it more as one unified scent!
